Changing Your Life: Starts with a Pen

Share post:

The fastest way to change your outside world – is to change your inner one.

While it may not be as sexy as buying a Peloton, traversing the Himalayas or even as simple as drinking more gallons of water, if you want to change your life – it’s an inside job.

Sure, you can invest thousands in seeing the latest pseudo-scientist, therapist or listening to a hypnotic suggestion track on repeat, or you can get back to doing it the way our ancestors, the witches and shamans, did it – on paper.

Avra Kadabra isn’t a misspelled Magicians mantra; it’s an old Aramaic word translated to “it will be created with my words.”  Word Magic. The very principle is known to every Writer to evoke healing, manifestation and, yes, “magic.” It has the power to sell, to buy, to excite. The words we write evoke meaning and emotion and move us into motion.

Modern women create vision boards filled with words they resonate with or want to embody. We read books that appeal to our knowledge-seeking wisdom centers. We write letters to our past and future selves evoking the emotion and experience of seeing, doing and being the things we put into those written fortunes.

You have been trusting your fate to words from the day you first formed an ‘A’ in primary school and learned that strung-together letters have power.

So, why don’t we, as women, use that power?

At the end of an old year and the start of a new one we pen poetic love letters to ourselves on social media. We write off the old and welcome the new. We reconnect and begin to rewrite that which didn’t pan out in the year gone past.

If you want to change your story, you simply need to pick up the pen.

Writing is the single greatest tool you have to connect directly and intimately with your intuition and subconscious (also known as your unconscious). To change things at a cellular level and truly drive the change from the inside without having to make the conscious choice the default (and most likely to fail).

When we change things inside our unconscious, we rewrite the scripts our brain uses to run our everyday life. Everything from our health and habits to our beliefs about vacations or wealth. If you want to make lasting change, indeed deep intentional change for your highest good – the fastest way to do it, that works every single time, is through your unconscious mind.

Start with a journal. Open it up and simply write “Dear Me, I wish you knew…” and let your intuition write what comes next. At first, it will feel silly and contrived. You may ‘hear’ things that scare you or write things you don’t know where they are coming from. It’s you. It’s always been you.

Learning to communicate with ourselves is the first step in creating a relationship with our subconscious, the unconscious part of ourselves that makes decisions it thinks are in our best interest but are often more of self-preservation and habit. Habits aren’t bad. They are control mechanisms our subconscious uses to automate based on what’s worked in the past to keep us safe.

When we communicate with our subconscious through writing, we actually allow it to open up, process and reflect on the choices it’s making behind the scenes, so new options and opportunities become available.

Write down how you deserve or desire to be a millionaire enough, and your conscious gets it on a logical level of understanding. Have a discussion with your unconscious about your money beliefs, desires and fears and allow it to write a new future, one where ‘wealthy’ includes a sexy fat bank account, and your beliefs about that money don’t include it is hard, or that you don’t deserve it after all.

While I would never suggest you ‘quit therapy’ and simply get a journal, I do believe that the words we write can help us create the catharsis, healing and future we desire most. Its why therapists will often have patients journal for themselves. They’ve been using ‘avra kadavra’ for hundreds of years.

Writing a book isn’t for the faint-hearted. It requires a process of catharsis upon the page as you dredge up unhealed or wounded parts of yourself you must face head-on and heal to complete the book. The work of writing our story is the hero’s work.

The truth we don’t say aloud but understand is that Writers are healers – of themselves, of their clients, communities and the world. We write books to share our wisdom and create a path to others’ salvation of themselves. We create with words the world we want to live in, be part of and create.

So, ready to change your life? Write about it.

As a Ghostwriter, Author, Book Writing Coach and Copywriter, I know that our stories are the stuff that set us free. If you’re stuck in your past – write about it. Want a different future – write about it.

Don’t let Hamilton be the only main character who can “write my (his) way out.” You have the power inside of you to befriend your subconscious, tussle with your intuition and write a future you love.

… it starts with a pen.
